Most frames are home-made and adapted to suit the tapestry weaving project so personalised to suit. Often off cuts, remnants, and reused wood, MDF and marine plywood is used to prevent waste.Ashford Tapestry Weaving Loom for Gobelin Tapestry Weaving (As illustrated behind). The loom has a weaving width of 103cm and length of 73cm. The revolving frame on the floor stand provides quick, easy warping with adjustable tensioning. The variable height settings and pivot action allows the frame to rest against the knees and the second shed is made by attaching leashes to a heddle rod and continuous warp allows the weaving length to be doubled. A range of squeegees are readily available at the Wasps Factory in Glasgow although I am in the process of developing my own print studio at home to incorporate screen printing. The wooden squeegees are preferred for purchase, to exert the right degrees of pressure and for durability.
The exposure unit is vital for screen printing to transfer the artwork imagery onto the screen through use of printed, drawn, or masked off acetate film or polyester drafting film like Kodatrace. The screen is coated with a photographic chemical solution that is sensitive to light known as photo- emulsion. When the light hits the screen, black and opaque areas of the image block light resulting in the emulsion washing out from the mesh which then becomes the printable area. The screen-printing exposure units at the Wasps Factory in Glasgow comprises both an ultraviolet (UVA) light source and a vacuum frame. This all-in-one unit ensures the light source sits underneath thick glass, with the screen positioned on top. The hinged lid closes over the screen and a vacuum pump expels the air, which sucks the top down over the screen to ensure sufficient contact is made between the screen to secure the image is fully and accurately developed onto the screen.
